None of that makes much difference but what is NAGA169 encouraging is that the majority of the third party ports so far have been very high quality, and surprisingly close to the PlayStation 5 versions. It’s been over two weeks since the Nintendo Switch 2 came out and it’s only now that we can bring our coverage of the launch to a conclusion. For no adequately explored reason, Nintendo didn’t send out review units until the day before launch, so no outlet was able to prepare reviews beforehand and even now it’s only the high-profile ones that have been covered in any detail.

That’s a lot of damn Switch 2 units sold just to play a refreshed version of Mario Kart and Cyberpunk 2077, a game that came out five years ago. In the same breath, Nintendo has also crafted a console that’s more restrictive than any other similar device in recent memory. Only Nintendo could make game ownership so onerous when the hardware is this good and the top-quality games aren’t available anywhere else. Seriously, what is going on with the length of these game names? We haven’t played Fantasy Life I, but it’s from another franchise we’ve never been impressed by.

Outside, 11 Bit flexes its art chops with considerable verve. Gnarled, tree-like rock formations curl across the arid terrain; matter swirls within shimmering physics-defying anomalies; a vast cosmic sea churns menacingly. Now this one we have played, for the obvious reason that it’s free-to-play. Maybe it’s just how the algorithm has us pegged but we’ve seen more advertising for Fortnite on Switch 2 than anything from Nintendo – and not without reason. The game runs extremely well on Nintendo’s new console and the demographic for the two must match up exactly.

The company also turned heads this week by luring away Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins from Dungeons and Dragons. You want a challenging survival MMO that’s connected to its settingBetween sunstroke, thirst and the constant threat of sand (worms and storms), Dune Awakening’s survival mechanics do well to complement its sci-fi setting. Thankfully, when the combat excursions start to get old, you can tackle story missions called the Trials of AQL, which arrive as alternate challenges that test your dexterity while explaining the history of the Fremen. Hidden amongst the craggy horizons, the trials felt like a carefully constructed extension of the lore, rewarding your attention with gear essential to survival long term. It’s clear Funcom cares about the material that the studio is adapting, and the involved and thoughtful Trials feel like proof of that.

After initially releasing on PC and consoles, Balatro is now also available on mobile, which is where I’ve been playing this twisted little roguelike. While the bones of Balatro will be familiar to anyone with a cursory knowledge of poker, the ingenious modifiers and ways players can hit higher scores makes the lizard brain light up in delight and deserves all the praise it’s received this year. 2024 was another banner year for video games thanks to a slate of big releases, strong remakes, and surprising hits.

Another third party game that seems like the last thing you’d expect on a Nintendo console, but surprisingly this one runs worse than either Street Fighter 6 or Split Fiction. World Of Assassination is essentially all three modern Hitman games combined into one, so there’s a ton of content available, as you try to take out your targets in as inventive a manner as possible. For a start, it’s the only current gen-only game available at launch. And while that’s not a particularly good indication of the Switch 2’s power, given that Split Fiction isn’t a very graphically demanding game, it’s still impressive that it works as well as it does.

You can technically build a shelter almost anywhere you’d like, and with the speed at which items respawn, plopping down your possessions in open sand is an obvious no-go. On one occasion, while taking out a duo of scavengers, the firing stopped abruptly mid-fight. As I sheepishly wandered around the corner, I noticed that the second scavenger was standing frozen, as if they’d forgotten I was there.

Sloclap is promising a string of future updates, alongside the usual live service accoutrements like a Battle Pass and various licensed collaborations. The game has even launched with a team-up with soccer icon Ronaldinho. It’s better to have a Switch 2 available to start with rather than waiting to spend potentially $500 or $550 for a prettier screen. The Switch 2’s LCD display, with its support for HDR, is more than sufficiently vibrant that we weren’t eyeing our Steam Deck OLED with any subtle or not-so-subtle envy.

This could have easily been an accessory that would have made Darrington Press more money but it’s a shrewd way to lower the bar of entry to their game. Daggerheart is a gooey, narrative indie-style game baked inside a crispy Dungeons & Dragons crust. It takes inspiration from several games that do things differently than D&D but also shines in tactical combat and specific character builds.

One big name that snuck in at the end of the year is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. MachineGames’ first game since finishing up its Wolfenstein reboots is another rollicking, nazi-punching adventure that brings the film hero to the AAA games era. It’s not only a big win for Indy fans, but for Xbox Games Studios that finally has a bonafide hit.

The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 Wireless takes inspiration from previous headsets in the brand’s lineup and transforms them into a budget-friendly, cozy gamer dream. Sloclap has stripped away the generous auto-targeting found in EA’s series, and instead asks you to deliberately aim where you’re launching the ball with your foot. Has this led to me flubbing several “should-score” chances? Of course, but the moments where I have pulled off a top-corner curler have been immensely satisfying. Not to keep circling back to Rocket League, but Rematch shines brightest during tightly contested games.
